Positive Expansion in the Middle East

December 13, 2012

Pump Screed FloorCoGri Middle East (CME) successfully completed a joint repair and pump screed project for an electronics retailer who has an existing facility in Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZ) in Dubai, UAE.

The client was looking to rent the warehouse to a 3PL client but first had to address the flooring issues. The floor had an existing screed material which was weak and breaking up. The racking was stripped out of the building before work could begin.

The project commenced with the removal of the existing screed by first planning off the old screed whilst repairs were carried out on the 2 expansion joints that span the full width of the warehouse. Once this was finished, the floor surface was prepared by captive enclosed shot blasting. This is a method where small steel shot is fired at the floor to remove loose material, providing a rough textured surface on which the screed will be applied. This ensures a good bond.

The floor was then ready for the preparation & application of FASTFLOOR-IT, a Hi-Tech performance highly durable, pump-applied, self smoothing, cementitious floor screed ideal for fast track installation and renovation of concrete industrial floor slabs. The 2,670m2 area was split in to 3 areas and application only took a few days to complete.

Once the screed had cured, the joints were transferred through into the new surface. This is where the joints are cut in to the screed overlay in the exact same location as those in the underlying slab. If this is not done, the overlay will crack when the slab(s) underneath open at the joints. Finally, the joints were sealed to give a professional finish and to protect the joint edges. As there were wide expansion joints at the doorways with no load transference, and the tie beam within the doorway was made from weak concrete and was just breaking up, CME executed repairs to 5 wide tie beam doorways. This involved removing the defective concrete, installing dowel bars and then filling with CoGri Epoxy Repair Mortar, a premium epoxy resin based repair mortar of the highest quality, with a demonstrable record of proven performance in the repair of floor joints to warehouse, distribution centres and other industrial environments.

Finally 48 CoGri Joint Stabilisers were installed into the expansion joints to restore positive load transference. The CoGri Joint Stabiliser eliminates concrete joint load transfer problems with its patented spring-like mechanism which allows it to expand and contract with the slab. When the CoGri Joint Stabiliser is inserted between the two concrete floor slabs, the pressure locks the slabs together and restores positive load transfer.

The client was very impressed with the high quality of work and immediately awarded CME another contract to repair expansion joint spanning 14 wide aisles and also installed more CoGri Joint Stabilisers in their facility located at Dubai Investment Park.
